The Department investigates all fatal aircraft accidents as well as most of the serious incidents for the purpose of accident prevention. Below are some brief highlights of the investigations that are on-going.

ATR-42 Accident in Gaborone

In the early hours of October 11, 1999, Air Botswana pilot took an ATR-42 aircraft belonging to his company without permission and flew over the city.

He wanted to speak to a number of people in top management and later crashed onto two other ATR-42 aircraft belonging to the same airline, destroying all the three aircraft and losing his own life.

Cessna 206 Accident in Maun

In the afternoon of May 1, 2001, a Cessna 206 aircraft belonging to Moremi Air, a Maun-based charter comapny, took-off with five persons on board for a scenic flight.

The flight was uneventful until on its in-bound leg, when it crashed after having been observed performing some manouevres at low altitude. There was no warning or distress call by the crew before the mishap.
