The Department undertakes a number of projects from time to time. Some of the development projects in progress or about to start are as follows:

Aerodromes Engineering

·         Feasibility study for operations of B737 aircraft or equivalent class of aircraft at Maun, Kasane, and Francistown airports and BAe 146 for Selebi-Phikwe airport and Shakawe airfield. The contract has been awarded to BKS Group (PTY) Ltd / Tswana Technical Consulting Services (TTCS). The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2001. Subject to the outcome of the study and availability of funds consultancy services for design will be invited.

·         Construction of cargo complex at SSKA. Design consultants are soon to be appointed.

·         Development for hangar plots, light aircraft taxiway and apron at Maun Airport. Construction has been completed and the work is in the defect liability period.

·         Improvement to check-in counters at Maun Airport. Final design has .

·         Development for hangar plots, light aircraft taxiway and apron at Kasane Airport. Consultancy services has been completed . Subject to availability of funds, works tender may be invited.

·         Construction of passenger terminal sheds at Gumare and Shakawe airfields. This work is in progress and expected to be completed by the end of the year (2000).

·         Relocation of Serowe airfield. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report has been submitted. Comments on the same are being communicated to the consultant.

·         Relocation of Ghanzi airport. Request for the allotment of site/land is in process. Subject to approval of the above and availability of funds, tenders for design may be invited.

Telecommunications Engineering

 o       Implementation of new Radar Data processing and Flight Plan Data processing at SSKA which will have 4 Radar control positions, Radar data Recording Facility etc.

o        Implementation of a new Voice Communication Control Switch

o        Implementation of two more extended range VHF stations one in Hukuntsi and the other in Shakawe. With the implementation the whole airspace will come under VHF coverage.

NEW CNS/ATM

·         The ATC Automation System presently being implemented under the Radar System Improvement Project has the capability to be upgraded to adopt the ADS system. Swedavia, a Swedish consulting firm has carried out some Trials in Botswana to improve an ADS- B.

·         The DCA is working closely with countries of the Africa Pacific Region and other SADC countries to develop and implement different components of the CNS/ATM according to the plan of the world body, ICAO. The Government has already earmarked fund for this work.
