What Does AWD Do?

The Airworthiness Division is one of the dual units forming what is referred to as Flight Safety in DCA and is responsible for the continued airworthiness of all Botswana registered civil aircraft, approval of aircraft maintenance organisations and engineers, and technical investigation of accidents and incidents. The unit delivers its services in accordance with Anexes 1 8 & 13 of ICAO, which lays out recommendations regarding international airmen licencing, airworthiness, accidents investigation standards and procedures.

AWD Management and Staff

The head of AWD is Mr. O. B. Moakofi, who joined the department in 1983, after obtaining a UK Civil Aviation Authority's Aircraft Maintenance Engineer's Licence in Airframes and Engines from Oxford Air Training School, Oxford, England. Mr. Moakofi also holds several technical qualifications including Aircraft Investigation from Cranfield Institute of Technology, Cranfield, England, and University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA. He has recently obtained a BSc. Degree in Aerospace Studies, with minors in Aviation Safety, Humanities, International Air Transportation Management, and Psychology, from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Florida, USA. He localised the post of Senior Airworthiness Inspector in January 1991. He was taking over from Mr. N. A. Siddiqui, who was his advisor till December 1998. In the area of aircraft investigation, Mr. Moakofi proved himself in January 1992, when his accident report was challenged by a review board but found valid after being reviewed. This was the report pertaining to a 1989 Kasane accident for which he was the investigator in charge. He has also conducted a number of talks, training, and presentations in accident investigation and prevention.

The rest of his management team includes Mr. A. Kitunga, Mr. L. Kennekae, Mr. W. Mlazie, and others. The AWD staff members are mainly aerospace/aeronautical engineers, aircraft maintenance engineers, aircraft technicians, etc.
